International Youth Day Message from Hashtag Gulu Initiative

Today, we celebrate International Youth Day, a moment to acknowledge the vibrant energy, potential, and resilience of the youth. This period of youth is often considered the prime of one’s life, a time filled with opportunities, challenges, and excitement. However, this energy, if not properly guided, can easily be misused or misdirected, leading to negative outcomes.

As we mark this important day, it is essential to shine a light on the unique struggles faced by street-connected youth in Gulu and beyond. From the dangers of drug and substance abuse to the harsh realities of unemployment and the lack of employable skills, these challenges threaten to derail the futures of our young people. The youth, especially those connected to the streets, face immense hurdles that can lead to a cycle of poverty, addiction, and hopelessness.

For Hashtag Gulu Initiative, this year’s theme, “Skills Development for Enhancement of Youth Opportunities,” resonates deeply. Our work with street-connected youth has shown us firsthand the transformative power of skills training. Whether in tailoring, carpentry, building, or agriculture, we have seen both successes and setbacks. It has become clear that while external support—such as that provided by organizations like ours and government programs—is vital, personal responsibility and a commitment to change are equally important.

So, what does International Youth Day mean for us? It is a call to action for both the youth and the community. It means encouraging a mindset shift among young people, urging them to resist the allure of drugs and the streets and instead embrace rehabilitation, hard work, and the pursuit of skills that can change their lives. It also means active parental involvement in the upbringing of children, resolving home disputes constructively, and supporting youth in their journey towards positive change.

This day serves as a reminder that the future of our nation rests in the hands of our youth, and that future starts now. By fostering creativity, innovation, and a proactive attitude, we can help our youth transition from survival on the streets to thriving in society. Let us all commit to building a society where no young person is left behind, where every youth has the opportunity to develop skills, seize opportunities, and contribute to the collective progress of our nation.

Happy International Youth Day!
