Commemorating International Women’s Day 2025

Today, as we celebrate International Women’s Day, we reflect on the strength, resilience, and struggles of women and girls in the Acholi sub-region and beyond. While progress has been made over the years, many women and girls continue to face immense challenges, particularly those in single-female-headed households, which are on the rise due to increasing family breakage.

Too often, men impregnate women and abandon them, leaving mothers to shoulder the burden alone. Faced with economic hardship, many of these women focus solely on providing for their families, often at the expense of emotional connection and guidance for their children. This widening gap in family support and parental care has led to a growing number of girls in street situations, where they become vulnerable to teenage prostitution, early marriage, and teenage motherhood—continuing the cycle of poverty and instability.

Empowering women is at the heart of breaking this cycle in our view at Hashtag Gulu. With our partnership with Family Life Network, we empower parents—mostly women—with positive parenting skills as a preventive intervention to stop children from opting for the streets. Second is having a platform for model parents in slums and neighborhoods of juvenile delinquency where positive change should be grown from within.

We reaffirm our commitment to being a truly community-centered organisation, tackling pressing social issues through collective solutions. On this International Women’s Day, we call for action, support, and policies that uplift ALL women and girls, ensuring their rights, equality, and empowerment are not just ideals but realities.
